Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Substance Use

PHP is a day program that bridges the gap between inpatient and outpatient treatment. PHP provides intensive, therapeutic services during a full-time day, but with days and evenings off. Sana Lake offers PHP on-campus as part of inpatient rehab or outpatient while patients live at home or in sober living.

Full Treatment, Full Flexibility

PHP offers a unique blend of intensive care and flexibility, perfect for those transitioning from inpatient rehab or needing more support than other outpatient options.

Inpatient rehab and IOP are more common treatment options, but PHP is a good middle-ground fit if:

The last step of an inpatient detox and rehab stay where you have the most freedom but still live on campus

If drug and alcohol issues are just being noticed and lower in severity, especially for drugs like cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine that do not typically require inpatient detox

Understanding The PHP Treatment Program

Here are some key answers about our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and what to expect from the program and the treatment process. If you have more questions or need further clarification, don’t let uncertainty hold you back from a simple call. Speaking directly with our team is your next step to making an informed decision about feeling better.

Addiction is a medical condition where your brain’s chemistry changes because of regular drug or alcohol use. These changes make it hard for you to control your use of substances even when they cause harm to you – like financial, legal or relationships.

Addiction affects your brain’s reward system and can impact your behavior, health and how you feel emotionally and physically. It’s important to understand that addiction is recognized as a disease, which means it needs proper medical treatment to overcome.

Yes, Sana Lake offers detox services to ensure safe and comfortable withdrawals. Detox for the Maryland Heights clinic is done off-site, supervised by medical professionals who provide 24/7 care and medications to reduce symptoms like nausea, anxiety and cravings. The detox team will also help you develop a personalized plan to support long-term recovery.

During detox, you’ll receive:

  • Medical Supervision: Continuous monitoring to manage symptoms.
  • Comfort Medications: To reduce discomfort and stabilize your health.
  • Emotional Support: Counseling and peer encouragement to ease anxiety.

When participating in a PHP, you can expect comprehensive support aimed at helping you manage your addiction and regain control over your life.

The expected outcome is for you to leave happy, healthy and sober. Achieved by:

  • Stopping substance use
  • Improving mental and physical health
  • Developing healthier coping mechanisms
  • Restoring personal relationships
  • Increasing productive activities such as work or education

PHP helps you make the changes needed in your life and lays a foundation of coping skills and personal insight.

After completing PHP, most patients transition to a less intensive level of care. Extended care helps you apply the skills you’ve learned in PHP to real-world situations, with ongoing support to help manage any challenges that arise.

Transition plans often include:

  1. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Offers structured therapy with less time commitment than PHP.
  2. Continued therapy sessions: Provides ongoing personal support to address underlying issues.
  3. Support meetings: Peer-led groups fostering accountability, connection and mutual support.
  4. Sober living: Structured, substance-free living environment for those with triggers at home.
  5. Medication management: Management of cravings, anxiety and depression by balancing medications.
  6. Family therapy: Improves relationships and creates a supportive family environment.

The goal is to ensure you have a strong support network and resources to maintain a life with alcohol or drugs.

Yes, whether you are interested in the inpatient options in Dittmer, Missouri or the outpatient options in Maryland Heights, just call to schedule a visit.

While we try to include plenty of real photos throughout the website, a visit can help you feel more comfortable with your choice and allows you to meet the staff and learn more about the daily routines. During your visit or even on the initial phone call, you can ask any questions you have to make sure the program feels like the right fit for you.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) typically last from 15-25 days, depending on your specific needs, progress and the treatments prior or scheduled after. The duration is flexible to ensure that you receive the right amount of support until you’re ready to move to less intensive care. You’ll attend the program for several hours a day most days, which allows you freedom while still receiving the intensive treatment you need.
