35 Years of Hope: Celebrating National Recovery Month and the Professionals Who Make It Possible

This September marks the 35th anniversary of National Recovery Month. Originally launched in 1989 as ‘Treatment Works! Month,’ this observance initiated with a focus on recognizing the hard work and dedication of addiction treatment professionals. Treatment Works! Month aimed to highlight the often-unsung heroes in the field of addiction treatment – the counselors, therapists, doctors, nurses, and support staff who dedicate their careers to helping others overcome the challenges of addiction.

Over the years, it has evolved to encompass a broader understanding of recovery, including individuals on their recovery journey and all aspects of behavioral health. This acknowledged that recovery isn’t just about stopping substance use; it’s about rebuilding lives, and relationships, and finding purpose.

To mark the 35th Anniversary of Recovery Month and where it began, we’d like to take a moment to honor the dedicated professionals who make this work possible – both throughout our communities and within our organization.

To Recovery Professionals Everywhere

Our deepest gratitude goes out to the professionals who form the backbone of recovery support. We salute the first responders on the front lines, often the initial lifeline in times of crisis. Our appreciation goes to the hospitals that offer essential medical care, frequently acting as pivotal points in an individual’s path to healing. We want to thank all addiction treatment professionals who dedicate their careers to transforming lives, one person at a time. We extend our thanks to the dedicated behavioral health workers who provide ongoing guidance and support throughout the recovery journey. Lastly, we recognize the crucial role of primary care physicians, often the first point of contact and ongoing support for overall health during recovery.

These professionals form a crucial network of support, each playing a unique and indispensable role in the path to recovery. Their compassion, expertise, and commitment make a profound difference in countless lives every day.

Fred Mickel quote on National Recovery Month

To Our Team

Here at Sana Lake, we are privileged to contribute to the ongoing journey of recovery and growth for countless members. This would not be possible without our incredible team.

Every single staff member plays a vital role. From our admissions team who offer the first warm welcome, to our facilities staff who maintain a safe and comfortable environment, to our administrative personnel who keep our operations running smoothly – each person contributes to the comprehensive network of support that allows Sana Lake to thrive and our members to flourish.

Our therapists provide crucial mental health support to our members, guiding them through the various emotions of recovery. Our peer support specialists use their own experiences to offer understanding and hope. Our clinical team, including our dedicated nurses and physicians, takes care of our members’ physical health, managing the challenges of detox and ongoing care.

To our team, in every role, and at every level: You see the potential in everyone who comes to us, and your belief in them often helps them believe in themselves. Every day, you choose to support those fighting substance use, offering both your skills and your compassion. For this, we are deeply grateful.

To Our Members

We must give a special thank you to our members. Seeing your humility, your willingness, and your courage brings fulfillment and joy to our work. You are the reason we show up every day. It is an honor joining you in your recovery journey. You are the heart and soul of Sana Lake, and your transformations inspire us to grow as individuals, as care providers, and as an organization.

To the Future

As we reflect on the 35-year journey of National Recovery Month, from its origins as ‘Treatment Works! Month’ to its current inclusive focus, we’re reminded of the profound impact addiction treatment professionals have on countless lives. Their dedication, expertise, and compassion continue to be the driving force behind successful recovery journeys. At Sana Lake, we’re proud to be part of this legacy, working alongside our committed team and inspiring members to create transformative change.

As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our mission to support recovery in all its forms, honoring the professionals who make it possible and the individuals who bravely embrace their journey to wellness.

Together, we’ll continue to prove that treatment works, recovery is achievable, and hope is always within reach.

In Solidarity and Hope,

Sana Lake Recovery
